A Landmark Moment for the Town of Bath
Message from Mayor Greg Schene
Town of Bath, Berkeley Springs
Today marks a moment of profound pride for the Town of Bath.
We have received an official Proclamation from the State of West Virginia, issued by Governor Patrick Morrisey, recognizing what generations of residents have long known in their hearts: the Town of Bath is America’s First Spa Town.
This is more than a title on paper—it is a declaration of 250 years of history, resilience, and enduring community spirit. Since 1776, our town has stood as a place of healing and hospitality. From the footsteps of George Washington to the visitors who stroll our streets today, Bath has always been a destination for restoration, connection, and welcome.
Our Vision: One Block at a Time
This recognition arrives at a perfect moment as we celebrate Bath250. It reinforces our commitment to a simple but powerful mission: making our small town among the very best in all of West Virginia and the Nation.
Our “back-to-basics” approach—enhancing curb appeal, paving streets, and restoring sidewalks—is rooted in pride for our heritage and confidence in our future. We are not simply maintaining a town; we are elevating a national treasure.
By creating a more welcoming, walkable, and business-friendly community, we are ensuring that our local entrepreneurs thrive—and that every visitor who discovers our springs leaves with a lasting connection to this special place.
The Heart of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia
As home to the Berkeley Springs Water Works and the International Water Tasting, we have always known our waters are among the finest in the world. With this official Proclamation, that legacy is now recognized and celebrated across the state and the nation.
I extend my sincere thanks to every resident, volunteer, and business owner who helps shape the character of our town. You are the foundation of everything that makes Bath exceptional.
Let us carry this honor forward with pride as we continue building a vibrant and prosperous future—together.
