A WARM WELCOME TO THE
Town of Bath
america's first spa town
About Town of Bath
Welcome to the Town of Bath, West Virginia—a place where history runs deep, the springs run warm, and community spirit flows strong.
Founded in 1776 and better known today as Berkeley Springs, the Town of Bath is nestled in the scenic mountains of Morgan County. We are renowned worldwide for our natural, warm mineral springs, which have attracted travelers, health seekers, and settlers for centuries. We are proud to be home to America’s first spa town, where even George Washington came to soak and relax.
A Place Steeped in History
The town was laid out during the colonial era and named after the famous spa town of Bath, England. Our springs were first used by Native Americans and later promoted by colonial landowners and surveyors, including George Washington himself, who frequently visited and owned property in the area.
Today, the original spring basins still flow freely in Berkeley Springs State Park, right in the heart of downtown—a rare gem where you can still dip your feet in history.
Community & Culture
With just under 1,000 residents, the Town of Bath may be small in size, but it offers a welcoming atmosphere and a strong sense of community. Our downtown area is rich in art galleries, boutiques, cafes, spas, and historic architecture. Community events, wellness retreats, and farmers markets add to the town’s vibrant year-round charm.
Our Natural Resources
In addition to our famous springs, the surrounding region is rich in natural beauty, featuring hiking trails, rivers, forests, and scenic vistas. We are a destination for both relaxation and recreation.
Why We Love It Here
Whether you’re a visitor enjoying a weekend getaway or a lifelong resident, the Town of Bath offers a unique blend of historic character, small-town charm, and natural wellness that’s hard to find anywhere else.
