Message from the Office of the Mayor – Reflecting on 250 Years

A Message from the Town of Bath – America’s First Spa Town

Office of Mayor Greg Schene
Berkeley Springs, West Virginia

Today, as a long winter turns to spring, we reflect on the mineral springs that have shaped our
community for more than two and a half centuries and are reminded of something truly
remarkable.

From 1776 to 2026, the warm waters of the Town of Bath have remained constant—flowing at
74.3°F—offering rest, renewal, and connection to all who have come here seeking something
greater than themselves.

Long before modern streets, buildings, or town boundaries, these springs were already drawing people to this place. In 1748, George Washington visited this valley and recognized its quiet
power. By 1776, as a new nation was being formed, the Town of Bath was officially
established—anchored by water that has never stopped flowing and has never lost its purpose.

Generations have come here since—families, travelers, and those simply seeking to slow down
and breathe a little deeper. Today, in 2026, that same water continues to define who we are: a
small, remarkable town with a lasting story, rooted in wellness, history, and hospitality.

As we look ahead to the future of the Town of Bath and Berkeley Springs, we do so with
gratitude for what has never changed—the springs themselves—and excitement for all that is
still to come. This reflection is also captured in our 250th anniversary identity, “Reflections at
the Springs,” honoring the legacy we continue to share together.
