Building a Better Bath – Why Sidewalks Matter
Message from Mayor Greg Schene
Town of Bath, Berkeley Springs
Bath, West Virginia – As we walk through the heart of our historic town, the ground beneath our feet tells a story. It reflects where we have been—but even more importantly, it points toward where we are going. In the Town of Bath, our sidewalks are more than concrete and curb lines; they are part of the fabric of our community.
More Than Just a Walkway
A well-maintained sidewalk is an invitation. It invites young families to stroll downtown with ease, encourages neighbors to walk safely to local businesses and community spaces, and welcomes visitors to slow down and experience the charm of Berkeley Springs.
When our sidewalks are safe, accessible, and attractive, we are doing far more than improving infrastructure—we are investing in quality of life.
Accessibility remains at the center of our “back-to-basics” approach to community improvement. A walkable town is a vibrant town. It is healthier, more connected, and more welcoming to residents and visitors alike. Whether someone is heading out for morning coffee, visiting our historic springs, or exploring downtown shops, the journey should feel just as enjoyable and safe as the destination itself.
Investing in Our Future: Congress and Union Streets
I am excited to share that the Town of Bath is continuing its commitment to beautification, accessibility, and public safety with planned sidewalk improvements along Congress Street and portions of Union Street.
These projects represent much more than repairing aging pavement. They are long-term investments in the future of our neighborhoods and downtown corridors. Through these improvements, we are:
- Enhancing Safety by reducing trip hazards and creating clearer pedestrian pathways.
- Supporting Local Business by encouraging walkability and making it easier for residents and visitors to explore downtown.
- Preserving Community Character by ensuring our infrastructure reflects the pride we take in our historic town as we approach America’s 250th anniversary.
- Strengthening Property Values through thoughtful public investment and improved streetscapes.
Managing the Elements: Stormwater Resilience
An important part of this work happens beneath the surface. Safe sidewalks depend on effective stormwater management.
Without proper drainage, rainwater can create standing water, weaken foundations, damage streets, and accelerate deterioration throughout our downtown. That is why these projects are being designed with smarter drainage and stormwater solutions integrated from the beginning.
As improvements move forward on Congress and Union Streets, we are working to direct water away from pedestrian areas and vulnerable infrastructure, helping protect both public investments and nearby businesses for years to come.
Simply put, we are committed to building it right the first time.
One Block at a Time
Great communities are not built overnight. They are built intentionally—one project, one improvement, and one block at a time.
By focusing on these essential infrastructure connections, we are laying the groundwork for a Town of Bath that not only honors its historic identity while embracing modern standards of safety, accessibility, and resilience, but one that sets the gold standard among West Virginia Class IV Municipalities.
The next time you see crews working along our streets, know that together we are building a safer, more connected, and stronger community for future generations.
See you on the sidewalk!
