Hot Topic! House Number Visibility During Emergencies

During an emergency, seconds matter.

Clearly posted house numbers are one of the simplest — and most important — ways to protect your family and property.  Whether responding to a medical call, fire, or public safety situation, first responders rely on visible and accurate address numbers to locate the correct property quickly. If your home number is missing, faded, too small, blocked by landscaping, or difficult to see at night, it can delay emergency personnel when time is critical. A clearly displayed number on both your home and at the entrance to your driveway ensures responders can find you without hesitation.

The Town of Bath encourages residents to:
  • Ensure their house numbers are reflective
  • Contrasting in color from the background
  • Visible from the road from both directions — especially in low-light conditions.
  • Posting numbers that are at least 3–4 inches tall
  • Signage is kept unobstructed by trees, decorations, or seasonal displays
Taking a few minutes to improve address visibility today could help emergency responders reach you faster when you need them most.
