Greenway Cemetery – Echoes of 1862–65: Barstow’s Heroic Saga Resurrected

Remembering General Simon F. Barstow

On Veterans Day 2025 at Greenway Cemetery in Berkeley Springs, WV, a ceremony honored Civil War Union General Simon Forrester Barstow, buried there.

Dr. Dan Murphy opened with local history, including Stonewall Jackson’s failed 1862 bombardment of Hancock.

Speakers including Terry Heder (Civil War Trails), Ed Steers, Bob O’Connor (as Lincoln’s friend Ward Hill Lamon), and historian Steve French detailed Barstow’s service under Generals Lander and Meade, from Gettysburg to Petersburg, earning him brevet general status.

Mayor Greg Schene and Commissioner Joel Tuttle spoke; music and a marker unveiling commemorated veterans.

David O’Connell shared cemetery restoration efforts and soldier stories.
